Quality & Design
Katahdin Studio Furniture's Approach to Quality & Design
My name is John Stass. My crew and I build music furniture that is bench made one-at-a time right here in Maine. My pieces have an earthy character. They are honest and unpretentious, and integrate well with a wide variety of decors and motifs.
Unlike many of my competitors who import their products from Asia, I use solid wood construction. You will never see particleboard anywhere in a Katahdin piece of furniture. In fact, only my cabinet back panels and drawer bottoms are made from wood veneer, and this is because veneer is the strongest natural material for these purposes. If you buy cherry furniture from me… you get solid cherry furniture, not a cheaper wood stained to look like cherry. The same holds true with all my wood selections.

Every piece of Katahdin music furniture has a hand rubbed tung oil finish. Tung oil brings out the sincerity of the wood. I see no need to mask a wood's personality with heavily pigmented stains. However, sometimes I have a client who is looking for a special effect, or is trying to match other pieces in a particular room. So at the request of a client, I will work to match a color to a particular taste.
You will also notice that Katahdin furniture has a minimum of hardware. Sometimes I will use a touch of brass to add an accent, but usually hardware is used strictly as a matter of functionality such as in hinges or latches. Unfortunately, many cabinetmakers use hardware to save time, or to compensate for a lack of design prowess.
The details that distinguish Katahdin music furniture from the competition are evident in the clean designs of the pieces, and in the beauty of the wood itself. The shapes and forms that I favor do not follow trends, but rather are those that we are familiar with and have held up against the test of time.
Katahdin Studio products are installed in the music rooms of many famous musicians such as Melissa Etheridge. My custom designs are in museums, libraries and churches.
I would love to create a special piece for you. Contact me toll free at 1-888-783-2969 or email at john@katahdinstudio.com.
